Earlier this July, Rafael Viñoly Architects’ Model Shop Team gave members of the Model Makers Guild of New York a tour of the firm’s headquarters in downtown Manhattan.
Guild members learned about how the firm’s in-house fabrication of concept, alternative and exhibition models, and full-scale physical mock-ups using CAD/CAM techniques and meticulous hand craftsmanship supports the design process. Members were also taken through the firm’s 1,370-square-meter (4,500-sq. ft.) facility housing advanced 3-D printing and CAD/CAM equipment as well as traditional assembly and wood-shop space.
The Model Makers Guild of New York was established in 2019 and is a community of seventy professional model makers working in film/TV, theater, architecture, advertising, art/design fabrication and education fields in the New York tri-state area.
