With nearly four decades of experience, Jim Herr has designed, managed, and completed commercial, cultural, education, research, hospitality, adaptive reuse,  and residential projects. His expertise lies in coordinating design and construction through all phases for multiple project types and in navigating complex zoning and planning requirements as well as multi-agency approvals in urban contexts within the United States and abroad. He has most recently completed two residential towers in New York, New York, USA: 277 Fifth Avenue, a luxury tower in Midtown Manhattan that boasts panoramic views of the city skyline, and 125 Greenwich Street in Lower Manhattan’s Financial District and is currently directing construction documents production on two high-profile office to residential conversions of existing buildings in Midtown Manhattan.

Early in his tenure at Viñoly, Mr. Herr assisted in the design and construction of the Tokyo International Forum for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. As Project Administrator, his tasks included coordinating all document submission packages, managing communications between the New York and Tokyo offices, and organizing and scheduling 110 project staff during the 12-month construction document phase.  Jim has also been the Partner involved in the execution of the Rafael Vinoly Architects New York headquarters in 1990 and 2019

Among  Jim’s other notable credits are the Partner in charge of  432 Park Avenue, a super-tall luxury residential and mixed-use tower on “Billionaires Row in Manhattan, and secured the approval for a 400 meter tall mixed use residential/hotel tower in Bangkok, Thailand, The University of Pennsylvania Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine, The University of Pennsylvania Translational Research Facility which was completed on time and under budget. Jim has also led the design team for historic restoration projects including the Salon 94 Gallery on the upper East side of Manhattan and the Sailors Snug Harbor Music Hall in Staten Island, New York.  Jim has also executed custom single family projects in East Hampton NY, Watermill NY, Sag Harbor, NY and residences in New York City.  Earlier in Jim’s career at Rafael Vinoly Architects, he executed the Roger Williams Hotel for the Gotham Hospitality Group which included one-of-a-kind custom furniture designed by Rafael, 12 E94th Street Townhouse Salon, Lot 61and Bungalow 8 lounges as well as volunteer pro-bono work for the Perlman Music Program in Shelter Island, NY.

In his role as Partner, Jim shares primary responsibility for Design with fellow partner Bassam Komati.
