With more than two decades of experience in design, construction documents, and construction administration for commercial, institutional, healthcare, and mixed-use work, Charles Blomberg brings extensive technical knowledge and skill to Viñoly. As Technical Director, he leads the development of structural and enclosure innovations and oversees all core- and shell-related issues, including curtain walls, roofing, precast, glass structures, skylights, and all other envelope types. Mr. Blomberg’s team of structural, mechanical, and enclosure engineers emphasizes sustainable strategies.
Additionally, in his role as quality assurance manager, he oversees project specifications, manages digital project information, and ensures consistent implementation of the firm’s project execution plan. He also spearheads Building Information Modeling approach.
Mr. Blomberg has led the enclosure and special systems designs for all of Viñoly’s major projects. His experience encompasses a full range of building types, including laboratories, hospitals, academic buildings, museums, libraries, offices, residences, hotels, and mixed-use projects. Several have received awards, including the prestigious DuPont Benedictus Award, bestowed on the Samsung Jong-no Tower and the Tokyo International Forum. For both projects, he worked abroad at each respective site to coordinate with local architects, fabricators, and contractors.
Well-versed in sustainable design strategies, Mr. Blomberg coordinated the structure and enclosure of the LEED-Platinum David L. Lawrence Convention Center’s cable roof and overall exterior enclosure including tensile structures, cable-supported glazing systems, and vast skylights in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Recently, he designed a concrete open basket grid structure with exposed building cores that allows 432 Park Avenue in New York, USA to achieve a 1:15 slenderness ratio as the Western Hemisphere’s tallest residential tower.
