Transforming The Design Process: Building Information Modeling & Spatial Reverse Engineering

Far from creating just electronic models, Building Information Modeling (BIM) encompasses many facets, including: technology, people and processes. Rather than using BIM as a technology applied to solve a problem, Viñoly applies it as a technology that can transform the design process, e.g., the reverse engineering of spatial data into modeling assets – just one example of the ever-evolving BIM process and its transformative potential.

For the design of The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, Viñoly was asked to replicate the U.S. Senate Chamber for the center of the Institute but was only given limited periods of time – along with stringent security provisions – to survey the working U.S. Senate Chamber. This proved to be a unique challenge in that conventional survey techniques were not feasible, resulting in the firm applying a combination of leading edge, reverse-engineering technologies and BIM methodologies to reconstruct the chamber.
